Greetings Shelter Friends!

I know you have been hearing a lot about the Georgia Barbecue Classic coming up June 5-6 at Sam Smith Park and I hope all of you plan to attend that wonderful fundraiser.
However, today I have a very practical request to make: we need meal providers! We have many open meal dates the end of this month and throughout June and I was hoping some of you would be able to help or at least forward the message out to your network.
We have no meal provider for the following dates:

Saturday, May 30
Sunday, May 31
Tuesday, June 2
Thursday, June 4
Sunday, June14
Tuesday, June 23
Saturday, June 27
Tuesday, June 30

If you can help, please call Deborah or Molly at the Shelter (770-607-0610)  and they will get you scheduled.

We live in a selfish time. And we’ve become selfish people. But deep down inside, we all have a desire to do good and help others. What if we really did that? What if we got serious about serving people? What if we got serious about serving the people of Cartersville? Meeting needs. No, not just meeting needs…wiping them out.  What if every person, family, church, business, or group decided to get together and just serve somewhere in Cartersville?

And what if Cartersville got serious about changing the quality of life somewhere around the world? What would life look like if everyone in our city decided to get involve and serve somewhere outside of Cartersville?  What if Cartersville decided to serve the world?

A big “thank you” goes out to each and every person from Oak Leaf that contributed to our Cloverleaf Christmas project.  We delivered the items to Cloverleaf today and Oak Leaf was able to provide much-needed clothing (and a few other gifts) for every single child on our list!

The majority of the children on our list were sponsored by students from Fuel, our Wednesday night youth service.  These students did a fantastic job of stepping up and helping Oak Leaf impact our community.

Thanks again to everyone that helped make this project a success!

Cloverleaf Elementary is just down the street from the movie theater and is practically in Oak Leaf’s back yard.  With the cold weather finally here, Oak Leaf has the opportunity to help provide several Cloverleaf students with warm clothing for Christmas.

This is a great chance for you, your family, or your small group to share Christ’s love with these children in a very tangible way.  Listed below are the genders and ages of several Cloverleaf students.  If you’re interested, send an email indicating the gender and age of the child you’d like to sponsor to twatts [at] oakleafchurch [dot] com.  We’ll send you the child’s clothing sizes and other optional gift ideas.

Cherokee Youth Works is a program designed to help youth between the ages of 14 and 21.  Its goal is to keep young people enrolled in school until they receive their high school diploma.  It also aims to help older youth who have dropped out of school get back in school or earn their GED.  Cherokee Youth Works wants to help these young people set goals for the future and provide them with the direction and support they need to meet these goals, whether they decide to go to college or technical school, pursue a career path or obtain a job.

Cherokee Youth Works is currently working with six youth who have dropped out of school and want to earn their GEDs.  Because of unique circumstances, they are unable to participate in traditional GED programs in the area and Cherokee Youth Works will be working with these students individually at its Holly Springs office.

You can help by tutoring these young people as they prepare for their GED exams.  Study materials and practice tests will be provided.  The exams are divided into five subject areas: language arts and writing, reading, social studies, mathematics and science (some participants may need more help in one area than in another). Tutors are needed on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and early afternoons.  If you’re interested in helping out, please contact JoNell Courson, Cherokee Youth Works program manager, at 770-345-548.

Oak Leaf Church has recently been provided with an opportunity to work with the Bartow County Department of Family and Children Services. FOr those of you that have a heart for making a very big difference in a child’s life, we’d like to ask you to consider getting personally involved with the Bartow County DFCS. There are currently only 53 foster homes available for the 300+ children in custody of Bartow County DFCS.

By opening up your heart and your home to one (or more!) of these children, you have an amazing opportunity to give hope for the future to a Bartow County child. Stock Up was a great success!  A big “thank you” goes out to everyone that contributed – thanks to all of you, we now have tons of supplies to share with people around Cartersville.
